Nigerian Prophet Held For Stealing Five-Month-Old Baby!

The police in Rivers State, have arrested a self styled prophet with one of the new generation churches in the state, for allegedly stealing a five-month-old baby girl at a business centre in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

The prophet, whose name was given as Tony Anosike, allegedly sold the baby at the sum of N250, 000 to a syndicate suspected to be dealing in the buying and selling of babies. The police said the suspect is a regular customer at a business centre, situated at the Illoabuchi axis of Diobu, operated by one Mrs. Vera Ezechi, the mother of the stolen baby. Before the incident, the prophet had allegedly taken photographs of the baby and presented them before prospective buyers.

He was said to have informed the buyers, that the baby was abandoned by her mother. On the day of the theft, July 15, the police said the suspect went to the business centre as usual, and took the baby outside, pretending to go and see someone along Abel Jumbo Lane, off Azikiwe Street in the Mile Two area of Diobu. Hours after he was gone, the mother of the baby became unease and raised an alarm, that attracted passers-by and her neighbours. The matter was immediately reported to the police.

The prophet was later apprehended by the police, three days after at Rumuolumeni, in the capital city. The police said they recovered the baby, Nmesoma Ezechi, and N250, 000 she was sold. Apart from the prophet, the police said they also picked up the buyer, who was at the time found with many other kids, suspected to be similarly bought or stolen. The delighted mother of the five-month-old baby has however, expressed gratitude to God for the speedy recovery of her baby by the police.

Spokesman of the police in the state, Mr. Ben Ugwuebulam, who confirmed the incident, said detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) were still investigating the matter with a view to smashing the syndicate behind the trade in babies in the state.
