Life Imprisonment For Rapists In Lagos!

Miffed by the recurring incidence of rape cases in the State and country, Lagos State Government has endorsed a life imprisonment  for  any person, who forcefully and unlawfully engages in sexual intercourse with a woman or a girl.
The new law, which was assented to by Governor BabatundeFashola  on Monday, as Lagos Criminal Law of 2011, "are contemporary laws to protect the women and children," from unnecessary abuse and harassment. Fashola signed the new law along with two other laws namely; Lagos State Emergency Mana-gement Agency (LASEMA) Law and Criminal Justice Administra-tion Law.

Speaking on the laws, the governor, who endorsed the law in the presence of  the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeola Ipaye, said: "There is provision in the laws that simply say not all offenders would go to prison. Some offenders will be taken to the rehabilitation centres for rehabilitation. This will help decongest the prisons and make the people that passed through the institution to be useful to the society again."

He expressed dismay that a country like Nigeria, which: "Was mouthing its determination to fight corruption was still making do with a law enacted over a century ago in its administration of criminal conducts."
Section 258 (1) of the law stipulates that any man who: "Has unlawful sexual intercourse with a woman or girl, without her consent, is guilty of the offence of rape and liable to imprisonment for life."
