Policeman Rapes Nursing Mother In Police Cell

A nursing mother detained at Soro Police Station in Ganjuwa LocalGovernment Area of Bauchi State for alleged conspiracy and culpable homicide, Hafsat Manye, has alleged that a policeman raped her.

The state's coordinator of the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, Hanbal Muhammed Zubair, said Manye briefed the council during its recent visitation to federal prisons in the state.

He said the incident was reported to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), adding that "We were equally informed that the case has been reported to the Criminal Investigation Department in the state headquarters".

He said the state police command had informed the council that investigations had been concluded and that the officer in question would face disciplinary action.

One of Hafsat's relations, who pleaded anonymity, said after she was raped, that two other officers at the station took her to Soro General Hospital where she was admitted for two days.

"The medical officer was coming from the hospital to monitor her recovery in the cell. If the officer involved is found to have a case to answer, then he should be treated like a common criminal and face the full wrath of the law", he said.

According to him, the rapist came to Hafsat's cell pretending to help her when her one-year-old child was crying.

"She wanted to raise an alarm, but the police officer threatened to shoot if she dared him. He also warned against reporting the matter to anyone. She was unconscious after she was raped", he said.
