Members of civil society organisations in Edo State, on Thursday, barricaded the gate of the state police headquarters in Benin City over the continued incarceration of the executive director of the African Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), Reverend David Ugolor and they were dispersed with teargas.
The police have denied Ugolor's wife, Ngozi, access to the husband. They refused to allow Mrs Ugolor to give food to her husband, saying that they would take care of his feeding, an action which was said to have made Ugolor to embark on hunger strike, with the gate barricading protesters drawing attention to the possibility of an alleged plot to poison the activist.
Rev. David Ugolor, has appealed to the Inspector- General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, to grant him bail on account of his poor health.
Ugolor in letter written by his lawyer Olayiwola Afolabi and addressed to the IGP, urged the police boss to release him to a reliable surety because he has denied the allegation in a statement to the police.
The letter appealed to the IGP to consider the health condition of the accused and release him from police cell.
It urged the IGP to watch the video tape where Ugolor and the suspect confronted each other after the identification parade.
As founder of ANEEJ and its Executive Director, Rev. David Ugolor entrenched a non-violent approach to development.
It is also imperative to inform the Nigerian public that Rev. David Ugolor is a life saver, as his natural penchant for poverty eradication, enlarging the voice of the voiceless, assisting the poor and needy is unparalleled in his almost twenty-five years of effective and result-oriented activism.
