Nasarawa State University Shut Down Indefinitely Following Protest That Resulted In The Death Of Some Students

Tragedy struck this morning at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, when some students were shot dead by some trigger-hungry military operatives. 

 I hear the students embarked on a protest this morning over the non availability of water on campus, somewhere along the line the military operatives were invited to calm the environment, while on that something tragically went wrong resulting in the soldiers harassing and beating the students....to cut a long story short about 3 to 4 students were killed. 

 Meanwhile the school has been shut down indefinitely with the Governor of Nasarawa state, Tanko Almakura, advising all students to evacuate the campus immediate effect till further notice. Some graphic photos from the protest after the cut...

SAD: Truck Crushes 15-Year-Old Girl To Death While On Teacher’s Errand To Buy Cooked ‘Ofada’ Rice

A 15-year-old pupil, Miss Kemi Obanla, was crushed to death by a truck driver in front of Lafenwa Comprehensive High School, Ota, Ogun State, last Thursday while running errands for her class teacher.

It was alleged that the teacher had asked Kemi to go and buy cooked ‘ofada’ rice for her around 10am on the day.

An eyewitness, who craved anonymity, said:

 “The girl was knocked down when she was crossing the road. After hitting her, the driver of the vehicle attempted to escape but the youths around apprehended him.

NUC Suspends Operational License Of Madonna University And 6 Other Private Universities

The National Universities Commission has on Wednesday suspended the operational licenses of seven private universities for allegedly not meeting up to its set targets on school facilities and academic programmes as established by the NUC.

ASUU Denies Plan to Call Off Strike

THE Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has dismissed claim by the Minister of Education, Professor Rakayat Rufai, that the union will call off its ongoing strike Monday.

ASUU chairman in the University of Ibadan, Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye said the strike was still on and total until the federal government substantially implemented the agreement reached with the union in 2009.

Ajiboye said the National Assembly had played its role with the passage of the 70 year retirement age for academics in the Professorial cadre.

He said, “the Union is aware of the passage of the 70 years retirement age by the two houses of the National Assembly. However, we are quick to point out that a bill becomes a law only when it is accented to by the President. Our Union is still awaiting the law.”

“That apart from the retirement age, other issues outstanding include: University autonomy (presently Governing Councils of all Federal universities have been dissolved), Funding of Universities – this is of very serious concern to our Union due to the level of degradation in those Universities, payment of earned allowances and other welfare matters to our members.
