Sonia Ike Appointed As New Miss Black Africa UK 2013 As Winner, Precious Okeke Is Disqualified

The organizers of the beauty pageant which took place about two weeks ago at the Royal Regency Hall in east London, have announced that their crowned queen, Precious Okeke has been disqualified due to pageant terms and conditions. While 19-year old Sonia Ike is now the reigning queen. Read the press statement issued to that effect below:

The Miss Black Africa UK finals took place on the 5th of October with the judging panel made up of Ini Edo, Adebayo Jones, Sporah Njau, Jenni Steele and Kunle Lawani. The Miss Black Africa pageant is the largest ethnic pageant in the UK, with over a thousand applications received in 2013. Miss Black Africa is also the current holder of the BEFFTA Best Beauty Pageant in the UK Award.

Miss Black Africa pageant director Dele Onabowu said " I am sure that the girls in question did not try to flout the rules.

Former Beauty Queen Nike Oshinowo Welcomes Set Of Twins

The 47 year old beauty queen/entrepreneur welcomed her twins via a gestational surrogate in the United States of America.

Gestational surrogacy is when a woman (surrogate mother) carries and delivers a child that is not genetically related to her. That is, the surrogate carries a child that was conceived using eggs and sperm from a couple or from donor eggs and sperm.

Muslim Women And Scholars React To Miss Muslimah Beauty Pageant Won By A Nigerian Woman

There has been Islamic responses to the Muslims Miss World beauty pageant known as  Miss Muslimah World contest organized by the Muslimah Foundation.  The 2013 Miss Muslimah World contest was won by a Nigerian, Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The contest was organized as a riposte to the British-run Miss World pageant.

Eka Shanti founded the pageant three years ago when she lost her broadcasting job as she decided to start wearing hijab. The pageant is "Islam's answer to Miss World," she said.

"This year we deliberately held our event just before the Miss World final to show that there are alternative role models for Muslim women," she said.

The pageant has elicited series of reactions from Muslim women and scholars, while some believe the pageant violated the Islamic rule on women, others believe it's a welcome development. See their mixed reactions below:

Islamic activist, Professor Lakin Akintola released a press statement commending the organizers of the pageant as well as felicitating with the winner. Professor Akintola said:

"We align with the contest in view of the fact that the criteria were not indecent exposure and provocative postures. The contestants were tested in the areas of recitation of the Glorious Qur'an, Islamic biography, Islamic jurisprudence and current affairs. The event has also proved beyond reasonable doubt that Islam doesn't repress its women neither does it push them to the background. The event has added another feather to the cap of Nigeria and the African continent as a whole.

However some other scholars have expressed their opinions against the pageant saying "Muslimah beauty is for the husband to see not the world."

Marie Miller Wins 2013 Miss Earth Nigeria

Popular video vixen/model, Marie Miller has been crowned 2013 Miss Earth Nigeria queen beating 23 other contestants. Marie won the coveted prize of a brand new 2013 Toyota Avensis and N3 million one year salary. And she will also represent Nigeria at the Miss Earth pageant later this year.

Thank goodness for this new development because I have never liked the idea of toddlers going into beauty contest such as “Toddlers & Tiaras” and its spin-off, “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,” that feature very young contestants including babies. I believe there are better activities to engage them with that will impact their lives positively than flaunting their sexuality too early.

The World Muslimah Foundation, a Muslim women’s group, held a beauty contest called  Muslimah World exclusively for Muslim women in the Indonesian capital on Wednesday, in response to the Miss World competition currently taking place in Bali. And a Nigerian woman has emerged the winner.

The 20 finalists, who were all required to wear headscarves, put on a glittering show for the final of Muslimah World, strolling up and down a catwalk in elaborately embroidered dresses and stilettos.

Miss World Beauty Pageant Moved To Bali After Muslim Protests In Jakarta

The final of Miss World later this month will take place on the Hindu-majority holiday island of Bali instead of near the capital, after days of Muslim hard line protests.

Thousands took to the streets this week to denounce the decision to hold the beauty pageant in the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation, with protesters burning the organisers in effigy and branding them "infidels".

Miss Adekemi Emmanuel is the winner of Miss West Africa Nigeria 2013/14. A graduate of computer science from ondo state, she won the coveted crown on 17 of August in Asaba and she will represent Nigeria in Cape Verde. 

Her pet project is on roll off malaria and helping the vulnerable children. The pageant was organised by Dsinatra entertainment.

A total of 131 contestants, each representing a country, have arrived in Bali to take part in the month-long Miss World 2013 competition. This is a record number of contestants against 116 contestants who took part in last year’s competition.

The grand finale of the pageant, to be held on 28 September in Jakarta, will choose a winner, who will be crowned Miss World 2013 by China’s Wenxia Yu, Miss World 2012.

PHOTOS: Protests In Indonesia Over The 2013 Miss World Pageant

Indonesian Muslim hardliners have resumed protests against the 2013 Miss World pageant despite the fact that contestants will not be allowed to wear bikinis this year. But the organisers are insisting that the event would go on as scheduled this weekend on the resort island of Bali.

In Jakarta, the capital, about 1,000 members of the hardline Islamic group Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia rallied outside the building housing the local organiser of the contest.

Chanting "Allah akbar" (God is great), the protesters, mostly women, waved banners reading "Miss World Culture Liberalisation Campaign" and "Reject Miss World".

Genevieve Nnaji To Be One Of The Judges At The 2013 Miss Earth Beauty Pageant

She will join other international stars such as Austrian-born actor and former model, Boris Kodjoe, Amber Rose, Karly Redd and Kelechi Amadi Obi as judges for the this year's Miss Earth Beauty Pageant.

Director of the Nigerian arm of Miss Earth International, Ibinabo Fiberesima said: 

“The year’s edition would be different because we are currently in talks with top dignitaries who are passionate about the environment and the earth at large.”
