The Majority Leader of the Edo House of Assembly, Philip Shuaibu on Sunday, shared his first salary among women of his constituency.
The women, numbering more than 500, queued up to receive their own share of the lawmaker`s salary.
Shuaibu, who is representing Etsako West Constituency 1 in the state Assembly, said it was a way of appreciating the women for their role in his re-election.
He said that the sharing his salary would not stop him from delivering the dividends of democracy to the people.
The representative promised the women empowerment through Small and Medium Enterprises (SME), which he started during his first term in the Assembly.
"Just like what I did in my last term, women will be empowered with N200,000 each to start any business of their choice," he said, "Although I started late during my first term, I am starting quite early this time around to empower a good number of women."
The lawmaker`s wife, Mariam Shuaibu, alleged that politicians merely used women during electioneering and dumped them after getting into position.
"The cups of rice, salt, pure water, among others, always shared to women by politicians during electioneering is nothing compared with when they are empowered," she said, "I have come to realise that what politicians do is to use women during electioneering and that ends there. I feel the women deserve more from politicians, especially in the area of empowerment."
Shuaibu urged women to liberate themselves by coming out of their hiding to vie for elective positions.
"We do not have to always support the men or wait for affirmative action to occupy a position of authority; all we need do is support ourselves the same way we have always done to the men."
