Demolition of buildings affected by the plane crash at Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos ended on Wednesday, four days after the tragedy.
When our correspondent visited the site, search and rescue workers were seen packing the rubble of the plane and four buildings affected by the crash into trucks.
Officials of the Accident Investigation Bureau at the scene had said fumigation of the area was the next step after the rubble had been disposed of.
Officials of Port Health Services under the Federal Ministry of Health on Wednesday started fumigation of the site where Dana Air’s Boeing MD-83 plane crashed on Sunday.
The health officials were supported by officials of National Emergency Management Agency; Nigerian Security and Civil Defence; the fire service and Red Cross Society.
A health official, who craved anonymity because he was not authorised to speak, told PUNCH Metro that the fumigation was carried out in the interest of those living around the scene of the crash.
He said, “As you can perceive, there is offensive odour oozing out of the crash site. If this is not carried out, it could lead to an outbreak of epidemic.
“Certainly, those who are allergic will catch one ailment or the other. It is proper that after an incident of such magnitude, the next thing to be done after evacuation is to fumigate.
“For instance, this fumigation is absolutely necessary because of some pieces of human parts that littered the place. If such exercise is not carried out, diseases will spread.”
It was learnt that because of the stench and fear of demolition of buildings near the crash site, many residents had temporarily relocated from their residences.
However, some residents heaved a sigh of relief when they saw the health officials fumigating the area.
