The Kogi Command of the Nigeria Prisons Service on Thursday said 25 of the 119 awaiting trial inmates who escaped during the attack on the Koton-Karfi Prison, in Kogi State on Wednesday night had been re-arrested.
The Command's spokesperson, Mrs. Hadiza Aminu, while addressing journalists in Lokoja on Thursday, said none of the convicted inmates escaped.
"From reports available to us, a large number of gunmen attacked the Koton Karfe Prison around 7pm and threw explosives at the gate and opened fire on our wardens.
"One of our men was killed and the gunmen overpowered the wardens and broke into the cells, freeing inmates — 199 inmates all awaiting trial escaped, leaving only one inmate," Aminu said.
But Aminu said the attackers were not Boko Haram members but suspected armed robbers.
She stated that the re-arrested fleeing inmates were apprehended at various locations in Koton-Karfe and other villages along Lokoja-Abuja Highway between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
