The rich really are different, at least when it comes to their brains. In two separate studies, researchers found that experiencing poverty in early childhood is linked to smaller brain size and less efficient processing of certain sensory information.

Previous work suggested that poverty can contribute to compromised cognitive function and low performance in schools, but using imaging, researchers have documented measurable changes in the brain tied to poverty.

ASUU Strike Will Be Over In 'Few Months' – Minister of State for Eduction, Nyesom Wike

The Federal Government, yesterday, assured Nigerian students that the ongoing strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, would be over in a few months.

The Minister of Education, Barrister Esenwo Nyesom Wike stated this at the anniversary lecture of National Universities Commission, NUC, in Abuja.

According to Wike:

 “The Federal Government is very concerned about the state of public tertiary institutions in the country. The Federal Government is really worried about the ongoing strike of ASUU and the strike would be resolved in a few months.”

4 months down and few more months to go? What a shame. God help this country.

''Okonjo-Iweala Is NOT Responsible For ASUU Strike'' - Ministry Of Finance Responds

With the very shameful ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike in the largest country in Africa. Some persons have taken it upon themselves to distribute pamphlets in  mosques and other places accusing the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as been the brain behind the lingering ASUU strike.

To this effect, the  Nigerian Federal Ministry Of Finance has released the following statement to clarify its position:

Contrary to some recent media reports, the Federal government has not adopted a take-it-or-leave-it approach in its negotiations with ASUU. Rather, the approach is focused on positive engagement and achieving sustainable solutions to the challenges facing higher education in the country. That is why President Goodluck Jonathan recently appealed to ASUU to respond to government’s positive steps by calling off its strike in the interest of suffering students and parents. 

Despite this, for several days now, some elements in ASUU have been distributing pamphlets and flyers with abusive and inflammatory messages against the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in mosques and other places. This is taking academic unionism to a new low and infusing it with unnecessary politics. I am sure majority of ASUU members are not in support of this.

'Harvard University' Drags Nigerian Woman/Founder Of 'Havard School of Management and Technology' To Court Over Trademark Infringement

The American educational giant, Harvard University with the likes of Helen Keller and Barack Obama as its former students, has claimed the much smaller, UK-based Havard School of Management and Technology infringed its copyright and “threatened” its reputation.

Reverend Dr Tina Beloveth Powerful, founder of Havard, has rubbished the accusations saying the school was named after her Nigerian grandfather and that it has nothing to do with the American university.

She said: “We first heard from them in February 2012 saying that we were infringing their copyright. It was completely bizarre.”

18-Year-Old Nigerian Dominates In African Children’s Literature

The Golden Baobab Prizes for African Children’s literature, set up to celebrate and inspire the creation of enthralling African children’s stories, have announced the 2013 prize long list with seven Nigerians nominated  in different categories.

More inspiring is the fact that the youngest person on this list is 18-year-old Nigeria’s born Fego Martins Ahia (Ogenefego Ahia) who is not only the youngest on the long list, but also the only Nigerian in his category which is The Golden Baobab prize for rising writers.

Asari-Dokubo Establishes University In Republic of Benin, Names It After His Ancestor King Amachree

The leader of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force, NDPVF, Muhajid Asari-Dokubo has joined the swelling rank of private university proprietors with his establishment of a university in the neighbouring Republic of Benin.

Mr. Asari-Dokubo, who already owns a soccer academy in the West African country and another one in Abuja, said the university, which will be known as King Amachree African University, KAAU, had already been accredited to commence degree programmes beginning September 2014.

9-Year-Old Primary School Boy Becomes Nigeria’s Youngest Microsoft Certified Professional

A nine-year-old primary six pupil of Role Model School, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos, Jomiloju Tunde-Oladipo, has emerged the youngest Nigerian Microsoft certified professional.

He came tops among 21 pupils who sat for the professional examination in Lagos.

He is now a Microsoft office specialist in office word 2010.

Nigeria Public University Heads For Total Shutdown As NASU Begins Nationwide Strike Tomorrow

Public universities system in Nigeria is heading for a total halt as members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, will tomorrow begin a nationwide strike to protest two months unpaid salaries by government.

World's Top 1000 Universities: No Nigerian University Makes The List

The QS World University Rankings are annual university rankings published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) which provides overall rankings as well as ranking for individual subjects. They help in exploring the world's top 1000 universities overall and also compare the ranking of universities in a specific region, by subject area, or based on factors such as reputation or research citations.

Unfortunately the latest global universities’ ranking released last Monday (pictured above) had not even one Nigerian university listed anywhere close to the top 1,000; while three schools in South Africa and one in Egypt made the first 400.

In the first 700, South Africa had seven universities, led by University of Cape Town, while Egypt has six universities led by the American University, Cairo.

Not only was Nigeria not part of the top 1,000, its schools were completely left out even under search...thanks to ASUU and FG.

Edo State Government Secures Admission For Stowaway Boy In Top Secondary School

Edo State Government has secured admission in one of the state’s top secondary schools for 13-year-old Daniel Oikhena, who stowed away in the tyre compartment of an Arik Aircraft from Benin to Lagos on Saturday August 24, this year.

''Students don’t want us to call off the strike''...ASUU President

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said it is continuing its nationwide strike on the advice of university students.

President of the union,  Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge said:

“Our students have come out to say they don’t want us to call off the strike until the Federal Government answers us, because they don’t want us to call off now and later we go back to strike again. So, we are heeding the advice of our students”. 

UNIBEN's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Osayuki Oshodin Speaks On Sacked Lecturers: ''I was poisoned by these people''

University of Benin (UNIBEN) Governing Council recently sacked 44 staff of the institution allegedly involved in allegations that bordered on gross misconduct...see the names of the affected staff HERE.  But since the decision was taken, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Osayuki Oshodin, says he has not had peace. Recuperating from alleged food poisoning, he raised the alarm that some of those sacked by the university Council were after his life.
Prof. Oshodin alleges that some of the sacked staff were involved in sexual harassment, extortion and fake admissions which resulted in the rustication of 142 students...see what he said below:
We learnt your life is being threatened and that you were even poisoned recently?

Yes I have been passing through hell but I am not afraid God is my protector. It is these people that lost their jobs that are threatening my life and, as we are speaking, they have not given up. So if anything happens to me, all of them should be held responsible, especially one particular man who is fond of writing frivolous petitions. He is being used, others are hiding under him to perpetrate the crime but we know all of them. 

The problem is that there was so much corruption in the university before I took over as VC and they wanted me to do it the way they ran the place before and I said no. I want this place to develop, I have more at stake in this university than any one of them. I know how the land was given to the Federal Government for the university to be sited there, part of it is my family land. 

There was no compensation paid to us, but we did not make noise about it, yet some persons think they can colonize the place with their corrupt practices. I was even poisoned by these people but I survived.

Edo State Government Promises To Sponsor Stowaway Boy,Daniel Oikhena's Education Up To University Level

Edo State Government has expressed its readiness to ensure that the stowaway teenager, Daniel Oikhena, achieve his dreams by sponsoring the boy’s education up to university level.
Edo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Louise Odion, said that Governor Adams Oshiomhole was determined that ensure that Daniel gets the best education, regretting that the seeming crack between the mother and the father affected the upbringing of the boy.

Odion said: “Edo State Government is already taking steps to ensure that Daniel gets not just material but also psychological support to enable him achieve his God given potentials. As a doting parent himself, Governor Oshiomhole has followed the development closely. As a matter of fact, he personally engaged Daniel.
