The Benin Monarch, Oba Erediauwa, has warned friends of Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin, to desist from seeking the palace's forgiveness on his behalf.
Igbinedion was ostracised from the palace in 2008 for giving beads to some visiting dignitaries and engaging in what was regarded as “anti-palace activities”.
He was stopped from participating in all palace activities.
The monarch, in a statement by Secretary to the Benin Traditional Council, Frank Irabor, said the Esama has been advised on what to do to seek the palace's forgiveness.
The statement reads: “The Oba of Benin has directed that this statement be issued to advise the individuals who claim to be friends of Chief Gabriel Igbinedion that he was told long ago that he knows what to do to seek forgiveness and not to send individuals to plead for him.
“We would like to call on all the friends of the Esama to advise him to go and do what he has been advised to do.”

Oba gha to kpere, Ise!!!
ReplyDeleteAbout time. Just one question; Since Erah Lucky has been ostracized and stripped of all palace related authority, why is he still referred to as Esama? if you can enlighten me, great and if not, not to worry I'll just wait till I call/come home later. He should not even be given the same pix space as Oba... who does he think he is? Not that I don't like him (I wish that I didn't know him) but he brought this upon himself. As my father used to say "Omwan nai gu ghuan, to gbe oghogho ye egbe". he's so lucky that Oba Erediauwa is very nice, cautious, and peaceful and would not want to destroy what his father, Oba Akenzua II, created.
My friend, i feel your pain, but according to Benin tradition, when a chief is ostracized, he is barred from all traditional activities, but he can still be referred to by his title, his title can only be conferred on someone else when he dies. In other words a chief can be ostracized, but only death can take way his title.
