Strongman Of Kwara State Politics, Olusola Saraki Is Dead

Reports reaching us indicate that Olusola Saraki, the strongman of Kwara politics, is dead. He was 79.

Mr. Saraki, Leader  of the Nigerian Senate during the second republic, died Wednesday morning in Lagos.

His son, Bukola Saraki, could not be reached, but another family member confirmed the development to one of our reporters.

Mr. Saraki controlled the politics of Kwara State for about two decades until he was displaced as kingmaker by his son, Bukola, a serving senator, in the 2011 general elections.

The Kwara State Governor, Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed, has officially confirmed the passing on of the strongman of Kwara State politics, Dr. Abubakar Olusola Saraki.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Abdulwahab Oba, Ahmed said Saraki died in his Lagos State home and would be buried on Wednesday (today) in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
Wahab said Ahmed “has announced the death of His Eminence, Waziri of Ilorin, Dr. Abubakar Olusola Saraki.”
Wahab added: “The governor urged community, religious and political leaders to troop out en masse to receive the remains of this illustrious son and Nigeria’s political icon later today at the Ilorin International Airport.”
