Mandla Mandela, the grandson of Nelson Mandela, is facing charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), as well as pointing a firearm.
The charges stem from a road rage altercation with a 44-year-old male motorist in the Eastern Cape, during which Mandla allegedly pointed a firearm at the man, threatening to shoot him, according to Eastern Cape police. Its further alleged the former president's grandson severly assaulted the man with whom he was quarreling.
Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela confirmed the incident took place on Nelson Madela drive (near Sprigg street) in Mthatha, and that a case was opened at the Madeira police station on Tuesday evening.
The incident occured on Saturday.
eNCA.com has learned the delay in laying a charge was due to the victim first wanting to obtain a doctor's assessment on his injuries, so that a charge of GBH could be added to the case.
Mandla’s advocate, Mathew Mpahlwa, also confirmed to eNCA that a charge had been laid, though declined to provide clarity on the charge(s).
Police have collated statements from at least two witnesses, and their investigation is on-going.
No arrest have yet been made.
In July he was ordered to return the remains of his grandfather's three deceased children, whose graves he had moved without the family's permission.
The chief of Mvezo then launched a televised tirade against his relatives who he accused of trying to grow rich from the Mandela name. He also said his brother had impregnated his wife.
