16 foreigners were arrested and paraded alongside a Nigerian for alleged illegal importation of commodities worth over $5 million into the country.
The suspects, comprising of 15 nationals from Central African Republic and one Camerounian, were arrested through a joint inter-agency collaboration between the customs and military officers from the 23 Armoured Brigade Command Yola.
The customs area commander, Sambo J. Ton-Ipre, who said the suspects were intercepted along some illegal routes used for smuggling, said the arrest followed intelligence gathered by the intelligence unit within his command and another similar report from another "sister undercover agency."
Mr Sambo said the arrest and seizure, made on Sunday night, could not have been possible without the assistance of the brigade commander, 23 Armoured Command, Yola, J. N. Nwaogu who beefed up the operations of the customs with a truckload of soldiers carried out in an undisclosed border town in Mubi area of Adamawa state.
He said the seized items, which included narcotic drugs without NAFDAC registration numbers, were being carried into the country "through illegal routes on motorbikes".
