Banks in Omu-Aran in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State closed down yesterday, following rumours of likely invasion of the town by armed robbers.
Although the police dismissed the rumours and asked residents and bank workers to go about their normal duties, many of the financial houses, still smarting from the July 15 bloody operation by robbers in the community which left many injured, closed shops. This development, however, came barely 24 hours after the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Peter Gana, said the police were on the trail of the two students suspected to be brains behind armed robbery cases in Ilorin, the state capital. National Mirror, however, learnt that as at 12 noon yesterday, no bank was opened for business.
A security source, who did not want his name in print, blamed the scare on the sudden appearance on Wednesday evening of some "strange faces" at a mosque in the town. The source said the men wore very short trousers and had long beards. He said: "When they appeared to join evening prayers, many worshippers abandoned the mosque for them, fearing that they were members of the dreaded Boko Haram Islamic sect. The development contributed to the anxiety among residents.
