According to the union, it will be left with no option but to direct its members to embark on strike if the government goes ahead to re-appoint Sir Gabriel Toby as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of the school.
Chairman of ASUU, UNIBEN, Dr. Anthony Nonye-Emina, at a press conference in Benin alleged that during Toby's outgoing tenure, industrial harmony did not existed between the council and the unions.
Nonye-Emina also alleged that the Pro-Chancellor turned the university into a private estate.
Toby, in a reaction, however said the White Paper on the visitation panel to the school commended the council and "even attested that it had a good rapport with the various house unions".
He admitted that prior to the dissolution of the council, "there was already tension between the said council and various unions".
Nonye-Emina alleged that Toby's tenure as head of the board did not attract better funding to the institution contrary to expectation.
"This man turned University of Benin into a business centre to enrich himself," the unionist said
The union further alleged that Toby, a former deputy governor of Rivers State, took over by proxy the university's Internet service centre.
He said, "This company completely mismanaged information processing to the discomfort and embarrassment of new students. He virtually lived on the university's lean resources."
