Three Cameroonians, who were arrested in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, for allegedly selling unregistered and fake Chinese traditional drugs were, weekend, charged before a Federal High Court, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The suspects, Penda Geougs, Nana Patrice and Andrea Capoel, were arraigned on a four-count charge of importing, selling, distributing and being in possession of unregistered, fake and counterfeit drugs.
Arrested by officials of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, they were reportedly operating an illegal clinic at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Abakiliki, where they also dispensed and administered the illegal drugs to the public.
Six bags of assorted fake drugs labeled in Chinese language were seized from them. They claimed to be working for one Christian Gmipibio, a Cameroonian based in China, who sources the fake drugs in China and dispatches to Nigeria.
At the hearing, trial judge, Justice Tijani Abubakar, said the action of the illegal aliens was contrary to Section 1(1) of the Food, Drug and Related Products (Registration etc) Act Cap F33 LFN 2004 and punishable under Section 6 and 7 of the same act.
Abubakar said the offence also violates Section 1[a] of the Counterfeit and Fake Drug and Unwholesome Processed Food (Miscellaneous Provision) Act cap C34, LFN, 2004 and punishable under Section 3[1][a] of the same Act.
They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges and their lawyer pleaded for their bail, which the prosecution did not object, but asked the court for a stiff bail condition that will make it difficult for the suspects to jump bail, since they are illegal aliens
