Medical practitioners have been advised to stop using Dilation and Curettage (D&C) for abortion procedure now that even women with complications can be safely and effectively treated with Manual Vacuum Aspirator (MVA) or misoprostol without general anaesthesia.
According to the Ipas Country Director, Dr. Ejike Oji, procedures using sharp D&C are usually performed while women are under general anaesthesia, leading to a longer length of stay in the hospital and increased recovery time. “D&C is typically performed with general anaesthesia which is more risky for a woman and requires her to stay longer at the facility.Studies have shown that properly trained midwives and nurses can provide safe and highly effective simple post abortion care (PAC) services.”
He advocated for the need to prevent unsafe abortion and reduce delays in accessing PAC by using the treatment method of either MVA or misoprostol (using safe and appropriate regimens).
It was also agreed that there is the need to train and authorize midwives and nurses to provide PAC. Unsafe abortion, bleeding, malaria among others are identified as leading causes of Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) in Lagos State
