A man who stood surety for his run-away wife, Benneth Nnine has been remanded in prison custody by an Apapa Magistrate’s Court in Lagos, southwest Nigeria.
Benneth’s wife, Betty was arrested by the police at Layeni division for alleged assault. Her husband stood surety for her with a promise to produce her at the police station any time she was needed.However, sensing that she might be charged to court, betty reportedly took her belongings without the knowledge of her husband and disappeared.
When police demanded for the suspect from her husband, Benneth could not account for her whereabouts. He said she had run away.
The police arrested him and arraigned him before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court charged with aiding a suspect to escape.
The police prosecutor said the offence is contrary to Section 132 and 136 of the Criminal Justice Administration, Laws of Lagos State.
When the charge was read to him, he pleaded not guilty.
The presiding Magistrate, Mr. H. O. A. Amos admitted him to bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety in like sum. Benneth was remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri, Apapa, Lagos pending when he will perfect his bail condition.
