10 killed in post-election riot in the Northern Nigeria!

At least 10 people were killed while cars, houses and other properties were either burnt or damaged in post-election riots in Nigeria's northern Bauchi and Gombe states on Sunday, the local press reported. The riots started after supporters of the opposition Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) alleged collusion between electoral officers and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. In Bauchi, the campaign office of the State Governor, Isa Yuguda, was razed while several vehicles belonging to PDP agents were also burnt by the irate youths. The same treatment was meted out to PDP officials in other parts of state, including Azare, where angry youths burnt the houses of the Bauchi State chairman of the PDP, Ibrahim Yaro-Yaro, as well as that of the Deputy National Secretary of the party, Musa Babayo.

In Misau, the family house of the secretary to the state government, Ibrahim Dandija, was burnt, and In Alkaleri, the youth set buildings and cars ablaze.

In Gombe, attempts to burn the private home of the state governor, Danjuma Goje, was foiled, but the protesters razed the home of the state chairman of the PDP and those of his neighbours.

The mostly young protesters were reportedly displeased that the PDP recorded about 32 percent of the votes counted in the state, for which they blamed the state government.

Armed soldiers and anti-riot policemen have been deployed to strategic locations in Bauchi to maintain peace, while some of the protesters have been arrested.

The CPC recorded a strong performance in the largely Muslim north, but that was not enough to give victory to the party's presidential candidate, Muhamadu Buhari, in Saturday's presidential election, won by incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.
