Edo State: Soldiers intercept electoral materials!Edo State: Soldiers intercept electoral materials!

Soldiers deployed in Edo State during the National Assembly elections on Saturday intercepted a truckload of electoral materials allegedly meant for three states at Igbegun junction in Igueben Local Government Area of the state.

Our correspondent learnt the soldiers, who were on duty at the junction, discovered the electoral materials meant for Zamfara, Kogi and Ogun states when searching the truck. It was however not clear where the truck was coming from or going at 7.30pm.

But the soldiers later handed the truck and its driver to the police who in turn directed the vehicle to the state command headquarters in Benin City.

Over 21 persons were said to have been arrested in parts of the state capital on Saturday for various electoral offences.

Although the spokesman for the Edo State Police Command Mr. Peter Ogboi confirmed that a number of arrests were made by the police in parts of the state, he denied they were thugs.

He said, "We can't jump to the conclusion that they are thugs until we finish our investigations."

Meahwhile, the Edo State Governor, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, has expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the re-scheduled National Assembly elections in the state on Saturday.

Oshiomhole, who voted at Iyamho Community Primary School in Etsako West Local Government Area of the state, commended the Independent National Electoral Commission and the security agencies for their efforts.

He said "I'm satisfied with the conduct of the exercise so far. I recall that in 2007, around this time, the signals all over the place was unfavourable, people guns and shooting. But today (Saturday) as you can see, from all the calls that I have received, it is quiet everywhere.

"It shows that people are ready to vote; people are enthusiastic and patient.

"I'm also impressed by the attitude of the security agencies so far. If the security agencies maintain impartiality and neutrality, then there's something to hope for."

Oshiomhole, who arrived at the Ward 10, Unit 1 polling around 10:52am for accreditation, waited in the queue to take his turn. He was eventually accredited at 11:15am, and cast his vote at 12:42pm.
