Chief Anenih Foils Bank Robbery At Uromi!

The police training received by Chief Tony Anenih, over 30 years ago, came to play Thursday when he foiled a bank robbery in Uromi, Edo state.

The former Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party Board of Trustees led over 15 mobile policemen to foil an attempt to rob the Uromi branch of an old generation bank.

The robbers had stormed the bank as early as 9:30am, shooting sporadically.

They also took over the bank vehicle after overpowering the bank's internal security outfit.

While they were operating, Tony Anenih was said to have received a distress call about the bank robbery.

He quickly mobilised the police officers in his escort and those of the Uromi Police Station, leading the assault on the robbers.

On arriving at the scene, according to sources, Chief Anenih shot in the air, while the mobile policemen attacked the robbers.

The ensuing gun battle made people in the area including market women scamper to safety.

Having over-powered the robbers, they fled with one of the vehicles belonging to the bank and were given a hot chase by Anenih to the extent that they abandoned the vehicle and ran into the bush.

Confirming the incident, the Edo State police spokesman, ASP Peter Ogboi, praised the gallant officers.

An aide to Chief Anenih, Tony Ikpasaja, when contacted, said: " for Chief Anenih to still be doing this at his age, shows his unparalleled leadership role.

"You can imagine what could have happened if the robbers had succeeded in carting away people's money".

He also said the former Minister of Works was fine as he was not hurt in the incident.
