The polytechnic placed 11th with ten universities ahead of it, mainly of the first generation while leading nine other universities in the country.
Webometrics is an initiative on the ranking of 20,000 higher institutions worldwide based on web content to improve the presence of academic and research institutions on the web and to promote open access publication of research results.
The web ranking began in 2004 as a study of the qualitative aspects of construction and use of information resources, structures and technologies on the web.
Auchi Polytechnic is one of the 19 Nigerian higher institutions that qualified to be ranked in the latest ranking and the polytechnic is the only polytechnic that came in the top best institutions in Nigeria.
The Rector of the polytechnic, Dr. Phillipa Idogho, described the ranking as the beginning of world exposure and recognition of the institution.
She said the ranking, though cheering news, calls for rededication to the goals and objectives of the polytechnic. "Coming on top is not all the issue; remaining at the top is the real issue," she commented.
Idogho said the polytechnic would do what was necessary to maintain its prime status.
Meanwhile, the institution's spokesman, Mr Mustapha Oshiobugie, described the 2011 ranking as very instructive, especially fora country like Nigeria where discrimination against polytechnic education and its graduates had refused to abate.
According to him, "The import of this ranking is that with proper management, polytechnics in Nigeria are as good as the universities in terms of quality of education they can offer and the ability of the graduates of both tertiary institutions to contribute meaningfully to national development."
