Arrangements for the establishment of a football academy and the construction of a mini stadium in Benin City are underway. Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State gave this indication yesterday when he paid an inspection visit to Benin Technical College, Ugbowo, in Benin City.
Governor Oshiomhole, who was conducted round the school premises by the principal, Mrs Helen Odigie, said the mini stadium would concentrate on training youths on football skills.
According to the governor, the unused portion of the large expanse of land on which the college is built will be used for a mini stadium "to enhance sporting activities in the State."
He maintained that government will look inward to reposition the school, saying that he has approached the Canadian embassy to help restore the loss glory of the school which was well known for sport in the past.
"We will see what we can do to reposition the college. I also believe that rather than leave these hostel blocks empty, we can convert part of the school to a football academy. We will take advantage of the vast land available here to create a mini stadium. You never know, we might just produce one international player who would save all of us from poverty," he said.
