A 23-year-old nursing mother, Mrs Bose Lateef has been arrested by the Oyo State command and currently undergoing interrogation for allegedly throwing her seven-month- old baby into a well in Olomi area of Ibadan.
The woman was arrested on Monday after one of her neighbours, who suspected her reported the incident at Sanyo Police Station.
Police detectives were said to have stormed the area and were shocked to have seen the lifeless body of the baby inside the well, which led to the subsequent arrest and detention of the woman at the police station.
The suspect, it was gathered had left her husband in their Lagos residence and relocated to Ibadan after a serious disagreement ensued between the two lovers.
At Sanyo Police Station, the woman confessed to journalists of having committed the crime.
Bose said she had visited her mother around 10 p.m on the fateful day and had given the baby food when she was crying. "I didn't know what befell me, all I know was that I picked the baby and threw her inside a well located within the compound," she said amidst tears.
She added that the misunderstanding between her and her husband had been settled before her husband returned to Lagos last Saturday, adding that her action had nothing to do with the misunderstanding. "He even asked me to follow him to Lagos but I pleaded that I should be allowed to stay till Tuesday but he warned that I should be ready to take full responsibility for whatever happens to me, since I insisted on staying back till Tuesday," she said.
The state Police Public Relations Officers (PPRO), ASP Femi Okanlawon also confirmed the incident, saying the police was alerted to the incident by a man simply identified as Alhaji. "We went there and discovered it was true."
He added that the police had commenced investigation into the matter.
