The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some residents of the community who joined the monarch to witness the demolition of the palace on Monday, expressed mixed feelings over the exercise.
NAN reports that the Adams Oshiomhole-led administration had awarded a contract for the dualisation of the Auchi-Jattu-Afasho-Ikabigbo Road, and that the project affected the palace.
The traditional ruler, who spoke on the demolition, said that he was saddened by the demolition, but that sacrifices must be made to pave way for modernisation.
"There is nothing I can do but to allow the demolition to take place. Though I left the old palace when I was crowned, the palace has always been an ancestral home to the royal family.
"It is a good feeling because my great grandfather who built the palace also first constructed the road that is being modernised today.
"Be that as it may, sacrifice has to be made to pave way for modernisation," Mr Momoh explained.
However, a resident, who identified himself as Usman, wondered why the king allowed the palace to be demolished.
According to him, the palace has become part of the culture of the people and should be preserved.
"An alternative arrangement should have been made to preserve this heritage," he said.
