Gov. Fashola Sacks Over 1000 Striking Lagos State Doctors + NMA Threatens To Shut Health Services Nationwide

THE Lagos State government, on Monday, sacked over 1,000 doctors that participated in the lingering strike embarked upon by the health workers over non-implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).

In a letter signed by the Personnel Management Board (PMB), the disciplinary organ of government which met between April 11 and 13, 2012, each of the doctors was served a dismissal letter dated Friday, May 4, 2012.

According to the letter signed by the Chief Medical Director of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Professor David Oke, the board established against the doctors a case of misconduct and absence from duty without  reasonable cause.

The PMB also established against the doctors, a case of insubordination for failure to respond to lawful query issued to them.

Responding to the sack, the Chairman of the Medical Guild, Dr Olumuyiwa Odusote, described it as a confirmation of the government's insensitivity and insincerity to resolve the issue on the ground.

He said the guild had taken its hand off the matter and had handed the case to the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).
However, the NMA, on Monday,  threatened to shut down health services in Lagos if government fails to reverse the sack of about 90 per cent doctors in its services, after a proposed meeting with the state government within the next 24 hours.

Reacting to the sack, shortly after an emergency congress of the association on Monday, the state chairman of the NMA, Dr Temiye Edamisan, described the action by the government as draconian and undemocratic.
He said "we are going to wait. Forget about the sack letter. We have gone this road before. This is déjà vu. We know this has happened before, we are not moved."

Seriously Should physicians be allowed to strike considering the sensitive nature of their duties and hold the populace to ransom?

Can a government fire striking workers?
Human greed is insatiable and no matter how much is paid, more would be requested.
