A woman was yesterday killed by the police in Dengi, headquarters of Kanam Local Goverment Area of Plateau State while allegedly trying to stop the council Chairman, Dr. Saleh Kanam, from resuming office following a court order.
The chairman had been removed by Governor Jonah Jang and an administrator appointed in his stead but the Federal High Court ordered his reinstatement.
Kanam was said to have gone to the Local Government Secretariat with members of his council to resume office in line with the court order but were stopped by policemen who insisted that they did not have instruction to allow him into the secretariat.
Supporters of the chairman, it was learnt, attempted to force their way into the secretariat.
In the commotion, the mobile policemen opened fire which hit the woman identified as Mama Jamilu.
Meanwhile, in a statement, the state government said it has appealed the judgment and advised those concerned not to breach the peace until the appeal was determined.
