4 Persons Die As Truck Plunges Into Niger River!

Four persons yesterday lost their lives   in an accident that happened over the Murtala Muhammed Bridge at Jamata, Abuja-Lokoja Road in  Kogi state when their truck plunged into the River Niger.

It was gathered that the Mercedes truck with registration number XF 113 RBC was travelling from Toto in Nasarawa State to Kabba in Kogi State when the accident occurred.

The KotonKarfe unit commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission  (FRSC) Mr. Olusola Olusegun said the accident happened late in the night but his unit got the information around 5 am yesterday.

According to him, the vehicle was trying to avoid a pothole on the Murtala Muhammed Bridge   and in the process lost control, crashing into the river and killing the four occupants of the truck.

The Sector Commander said when his rescue team got to the scene; the trapped victims had already died, adding that through the cell phones on them they were able to contact the relatives of the deceased.

He explained that the pothole had caused several accidents on that bridge in the past, saying  the matter was reported to the Federal Emergency Road Maintenance Agency in the state but reasonable work was yet to be done.

The Sector Commander said the corpses of the deceased were released to their relatives   for burial and warned   motorists to desist from night travels, stressing that the accident would have been avoided if it was day time.
