NLC Strike Paralyses Economic Activities In Edo State!

ECONOMIC activities were paralysed in Edo State, yesterday, following the strike action embarked upon by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, over alleged failure of the state government to include teachers and staff of the Ministry of Justice in the recently approved new minimum wage.

However, the state government described the strike action as "betrayal of the Governor Adams Oshiomhole-led government," since government and the organised labour had earlier reached an agreement on how to implement the new minimum wage.

The striking workers reportedly beat up the government official sent to deliver an invitation for a meeting between government and the union.

The meeting was called to resolve the on-going strike action in the state which had crippled economic activities.

State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Louis Odion, who briefed newsmen shortly after officials of the NLC shunned the meeting scheduled for 2pm, yesterday, said the agreement reached between the state government and NLC was that the  government would consider any form of agitation from any of the unions as regards the payment of the new minimum wage.

The state government and the leadership of the NLC were in a meeting at press time.

All the ministries were under lock and key, yesterday, in compliance with NLC directive, which had warn that federal establishments and banks in the state would join in the strike if government failed to heed to their demands.
